Charlie Saikley 6-Man Beach Volleyball

Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3, 2024
Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue, 1100 Manhattan Avenue, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

Known as the "Godfather of Beach Volleyball," Charlie Saikley was the man who over 50 years ago brought the Manhattan Beach 6-Man Volleyball Tournament to the South Bay.

Saikley’s roots in the South Bay began in the 1960s, where as a school teacher at El Segundo High School, he also worked in the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department during his off-hours and summers. Through his work with Parks and Recreation, Saikley created the first city-organized volleyball instruction program in Southern California and worked largely with the city’s youth introducing them to the sport.

Saikley was legendary with the creation of tournaments that focused on the core components of beach volleyball: world-class talent combined with the beach lifestyle. In a nod to his original vision for the event that began in 1974, his family has worked alongside the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department to bring back the all-age inclusive, family-friendly feel to the event.

2024 marks the tenth year of the Jr. 6-Man, which takes place on August 4, 2024. This is a nod to Saikley’s belief in fostering youth involvement within the sport. It is expected that the youth tournament will also embrace the culture of costume-oriented team participation.

Additionally, the 2024 Charlie Saikley 6-Man Beach Volleyball Tournament will take place on August 2 and 3, 2024 at the Manhattan Beach Pier from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The spirited revelry and unique costumes will continue on as part of the fun and tradition of recent years for the beach volleyball competition, with the additional element of youth participation joining the celebrated event. The race is a 2 mile open ocean race. The course parallels the shoreline, concluding on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier.

This race is particularly popular with the Junior Guards as they test skills learned through their JG instructors throughout the summer. Awards are given for all age groups in a variety of Prone and SUP Board classes. Paddleboard racing has been one of the fastest growing ocean sports of late as the field of racers have continued to grow in recent years. While many Paddlers have their own paddleboards, as a courtesy, the L.A. County Lifeguards provide JGs with soft top boards prior to the race and Oceans Prone Paddleboards have boards to rent for the race and throughout the year. Ed McKeegan and Jim Sepanek have run the Velzy-Stevens Paddleboard Championship since 2011 and invite you to be part of this traditionally fun/family event.
